Honors

Richard Balon, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, received the silver medal of the third medical faculty of Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, for his outstanding contributions to international collaboration in medical education.

Jesse Bell, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, received an honorable fellow award from the Michigan Psychological Association for outstanding contributions to the field of psychology.

Edwin Demeritte, MD, resident in pediatric neurology, received one of three Outstanding Resident/Junior Member Awards from the Child Neurology Society.

Ana Estevez, graduate research assistant in physiology, is the recipient of the Van Harreveld Memorial Award from the central nervous system section of the American Physiological Society. She was recognized for her outstanding presentation at the experimental biology meeting. Her advisor is Dr. John Phillis.

Ronald Hines, PhD, professor of pharmacology, was awarded a Board of Governors Distinguished Faculty Fellowship at Wayne State University’s fifth annual Academic Convocation held in April.

Amy Kitchen, physiology graduate student, is a recipient of the 1998 Proctor and Gamble Professional Opportunity Award. Her advisor is Dr. Donal O’Leary.

Yi-Chi Kong, PhD, professor of immunology/microbiology, received the Lawrence M. Weiner Award, which honors outstanding contributions of non-alumni to the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Myron LaBan, MD, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, received the Frank H. Krusen Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Robert Lisak, MD, professor and chair of neurology, was awarded a Board of Governors Distinguished Faculty Fellowship at Wayne State University’s fifth annual Academic Convocation held in April.

Thomas McCullough, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, was recently honored with the Lamp Award, which is given annually to the outstanding medical student teacher in Years I and II at the WSU School of Medicine.

Donal O’Leary, PhD, associate professor of physiology, received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at Wayne State University’s fifth annual Academic Convocation held in April.

Alan Perlmutter, MD, professor emeritus of urology, was awarded the Pediatric Urology Medal from the American Academy of Pediatrics’ section on urology.

Jerry Rosenberg, MD, professor of surgery, was honored as a "Champion of Hope" by the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan. Dr. Rosenberg is also director of the histocompatibility laboratory for the Transplant Society of Michigan.

Liborio Tranchida, MD, professor of internal medicine, received the Lawrence M. Weiner Award, which honors outstanding contributions of non-alumni to the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Urology faculty members--Drs. Thomas Vates, III, Jimmie Lesleszi, Julia Barthold, Ricardo Gonzalez, Alan Perlmutter, and Patricia Fleming, RN--won second prize for clinical research at the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Urology’s annual meeting. Their presentation was entitled "Functional, Social and Psychosocial Adjustment After Vaginal Reconstruction."
