Dr. Hazlett is overseeing the core grant for vision research. |
Vision research at Wayne State University will be continued and enhanced through the renewal of a substantial core grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). With nearly $1.8 million, Linda Hazlett, PhD, will oversee collaborative vision research efforts among departments including anatomy/cell biology, immunology/microbiology, ophthalmology and biology. Funds will support the following three modules:
Morphology - This module will support training and expertise for use of light and electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, immunocytochemistry, and cryofixation techniques.
Tissue Culture/Hybridoma - This module will provide vision investigators with tissue and organ culture facilities, monoclonal antibody production, as well as appropriate training in this area.
Electronics and Computer Engineering - This facility allows investigators to carry out analytical and statistical operations, to gather data with microcomputers, and to provide image analysis capability to enhance and quantify light and electron microscopic images.
Dr. Hazlett, professor and chair of anatomy and cell biology, is also developing plans for a fourth module which will focus on molecular biology. She is proud of the collaboration that has grown within and among departments as a result of the NIH core grant. "The cooperative efforts that all of the faculty exert ensures continued success," Dr. Hazlett said. "The upgrading of computer capabilities is also ongoing, which keeps us current with new technology and should enhance our competitiveness for further funding in the future."
