Honors

Ramon Berguer, MD, PhD, professor of surgery, was awarded the 2001 Novoa Santos Prize from the ASOMEGA scientific society.

Fernando Diaz, MD, PhD, professor and chair of neurosurgery, was honored by the Hispanic Business Alliance with a state resolution that recognizes his achievements as a physician and a leader.

Robert Frank, MD, associate dean for academic and student programs, was one of 56 medical educators in the country to be nominated for the 2001 AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award, sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative. The award recognizes medical student faculty physicians who embody the finest qualities in a healer who teaches healing.

Bernard Gonik, MD, in obstetrics and gynecology, and Ning Zhang, PhD, and Michele Grimm, PhD, both from the College of Engineering, received the Award of Research Excellence at the recent Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Annual Meeting. The three researchers received the award for their poster presentation, “Defining Forces Associated with Shoulder Dystocia: Use of a Dynamic Computer Model (MADYMO).” This is quite an honor since there were 671 abstracts accepted for presentation, including 31 from Wayne State University.

Sunday Ilechukwu, MD, assistant professor and director of the Wayne State University Medical Psychiatry Clinical Research Division in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, was awarded fellowship in the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine at its annual meeting.

Richard Lewis, MD, professor and associate chair of neurology, and Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, associate professor of neurology and interim director of the WSU Stroke Program, were inducted as members of the American Neurological Association.

Robert Lisak, MD, professor and chair of neurology and professor of immunology and microbiology, was appointed to a second four-year term as editor of the Journal of Neurological Sciences at the World Congress of Neurology meeting. The Journal of Neurological Sciences is the official journal of the World Federation of Neurology. Paula Dore-Duffy, PhD, and Richard Lewis, MD, both professors of neurology, continue as deputy editors, and James Garbern, MD, PhD, continues as a member of the editorial board.

Stephen Migdal, MD, professor of internal medicine, was honored by the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan with the Ford Motor Company Champion of Hope Award.

David Rosenberg, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, has been selected by the American Psychiatric Association to receive the 12th annual Nancy C.A. Roeske, MD, Certificate of Recognition of Excellence in Medical Student Education.

Wanda Whitten-Shurney, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics, was recognized by the American Red Cross as a 2001 Everyday Hero and recipient of the inaugural Blood Services Region Community Award.

Michael Shy, MD, professor in neurology and the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, co-chaired a session on inherited neuropathies at the World Congress of Neurology. He also presented a paper titled “The Inherited Neuropathies in the Context of Cell Biology,” and his work was featured in an article in Neurology Today, a publication of the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr Shy served as visiting professor at the University of Iowa and will be a plenary speaker on the cell biology of inherited neuropathies at the upcoming European Consortium on Inherited Neuropathies.

Jane Thomas, PhD, assistant dean for student affairs, represented Wayne State University as one of the founding members of the Association of American Medical Colleges at its 112th annual meeting.

Vainutis Vaitkevicius, MD, professor of internal medicine, was honored for 50 outstanding years in medicine at an event that supported the Dr. Vaitkevicius Leadership Fund.

Michael Werkema, year III medical student, was appointed to the Michigan State Medical Society board of directors to represent the MSMS Medical Student Section.

Robert Zalenski, MD, associate professor of emergency medicine, received a certificate of recognition for dedicated service from the National Institutes of Health—National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
