Annual Telefund Campaign Kicks Off

Volunteers make phone calls to solicit support for the School of Medicine.

Telefund 2001 got off to a rousing start with the annual kickoff event October 3 at the Excalibur Banquet Center. It was a great opportunity for students and parents to visit with alumni and Dr. John Crissman, dean of the School of Medicine.

The Telefund campaign began on October 15 with students and alumni calling other School of Medicine alums across the country. The focus of the campaign is to provide student scholarships, support community outreach activities, and plan the Welcome Day ceremony, Career Day and other educational programs for students.

Many of the student volunteers are veteran callers. One such student is David Edelman, who made calls on several evenings. He finds the experience enjoyable. “It was nice for me to meet other medical students and get to know them. In particular, I had the opportunity to talk with a number of physicians who graduated in the 80s. It was great to compare how things were done then, and laugh about how some things never change,” he said.

Some students, like Samantha Anne, have made the Telefund a priority every year. Now a fourth-year medical student, she has developed a reputation as one of the top callers. She has the rare ability to bring in a record number of donors and dollars every time she hits the phones.  She will be a hard act to follow.

As always, the alumni continue making calls long after the Telefund is over. They have a vested interest in supporting academic and student programs. It is this commitment that helps provide an exceptional educational experience for students. To date, the school has raised almost $400,000, but is still looking to beat last year’s mark of over $550,000.

Those wishing to make a contribution to the annual fund should contact Elsa Silverman at (313) 577-6482 or send your check to The Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, 101 E. Alexandrine, Detroit, Michigan 48201, Attn:  Annual Fund.  As always, Visa and Master Card are accepted.
