WSU's Blaine White Elected to Prestigious Institute of Medicine

Honors 

Ramon Berguer MD, PhD, professor and chief of vascular surgery and interim president of The Vascular Institute at Harper University Hospital, has been awarded the 2001 Novoa Santos Prize from the ASOMEGA scientific society. The award recognizes his contributions to mathematical modeling of circulation and to the advancement of surgery for cerebrovascular disease.

Fernando Bianco, MD, resident in urology won first palce in the clinical category at the Michigan Urological Society Resident Research competition. His project was called “Prostate Cancer Stage Shift is Eliminating the Gap in Disease Free Survival between Caucasians and African Americans After Radical Prostatectomy.”

Bruce Deschere, MD, assistant professor of family medicine, was honored with the Family Practice Educator of the Year Award from the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Deschere is chief of family practice at Sinai-Grace Hospital and has served nine years as residency director for the Wayne State University Department of Family Medicine.

Michael Epstein, MD, professor of pediatrics and pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, was one of four individuals honored at the annual fundraiser sponsored by Variety- The Children’s Charity.

Michael Herzog, MD, resident in urology, won second place in the research category at the Michigan Urological Society Resident Research competition. His entry was on “Inhibition of Matrix Metalloproteinase Activity Reduces Metastatic Prostate Tumor Cell Proliferation, Osteoclast Recruitment, and Bone Degradation in Human Bone.”

Silvana Horenstein, MD, cardiology fellow, presented research work mentored under Dr Peter Karpawich, at the 22nd Scientific Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology. In addition, she gave a Young Investigator presentation at the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting on “Pacemaker Syndrome in the Young. Do Young Children Need Dual Chamber Pacing Initially?” She went on to receive the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Cardiology Travel Grant Award for her presentation. Her research mentor was Dr. Peter Karpawich, director of cardiac electrophysiology.

Bret Hughes, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology, has received an achievement award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Manish Jain, MD, fourth-year resident, received a second place award for his investigation entitled “An Interim Analysis of Three Dosing Regimens of Misoprostol in Second Trimester Pregnancy Terminations” at the Annual Junior Fellow Research Day—Michigan Section of the American College of Obstetricians. Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center OB/GYN residents presented over one third of the investigations in the final program recently held in Lansing, Mich.

Stephen Migdal, MD, professor of internal medicine and chief of nephrology at Harper University Hospital, was honored for his research by the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan at the organization’s “Champions of Hope” dinner. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in the fields of business, philanthropy and health care that provide eternal hope and healing to the citizens of Michigan.

William Peters, MD, PhD, president of the Detroit Medical Center Institute of Strategic Analysis and Innovation and a senior vice president of the DMC, is one of seven area residents honored at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s 7th Annual Heroes of Breast Cancer awards luncheon.

Arthur Porter, MD, professor of radiation oncology, and Detroit Medical Center president and CEO has been named by President George W. Bush to a 15-member Presidential Task Force to Improve Health Care Delivery for Our Nation’s Veterans. Dr. Porter was also honored with a “Commitment to Service Award” at The Coalition, Inc. Circle of Hope’s 10th Anniversary Ball for Children.   

Isaac Powell, MD, associate professor of urology, was honored for his prostate cancer research at the Light of the Night Gala, which benefits the American Cancer Society.

David Rosenberg, MD, professor of psychiatry & behavioral neurosciences, has received a “Letter of Commendation” for his presentation at Pediatric Grand Rounds at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati on “Toward a Neurodevelopmental Model of OCD,” which was a top-rated presentation for the Pediatric Grand Rounds series.

He was named the 2001 winner of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Rieger Award for Scientific Achievement supported by the Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Foundation. This award recognizes the most outstanding paper published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry during the previous year.

His paper, “Decrease in Caudate Glutamatergic Concentrations in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Patients Taking Paroxetine” was highlighted with an editor’s column in the October 2001 issue of the journal.

Dr. Rosenberg received the Outstanding Mentor Award at the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for his work mentoring junior faculty (assistant professor level).

Renate Soulen, MD, professor of radiology, has been presented the President’s Award from the American Association for Women Radiologists.

Ron Spalding, director of conjoint teaching, was elected president of the Association for Multidiscipline Education in the Health Sciences at their 32nd annual meeting hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle.

Larry Stephenson, MD, professor of surgery and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Harper University Hospital, won an Independent Publisher Book Award as co-author of State of the Heart: The Practical Guide to Your Heart and Heart Surgery. Dr. Stephenson’s book, published by Write Stuff Enterprises, Inc., captured top honors in the health, medicine and nutrition category.

Bill Underwood won the Resident’s Basic Science Presentation Award at the Michigan Association of Neurological Surgeons (MANS) meeting. His presentation addressed “Phosphorylation of Eurkaryotic Initiation Factor 2- alpha and Release of a Cytochrome c after Traumatic Brain Injury in the Rat.”
