1944
Estelle Wachtel-Torres, MD, is
director for the American Council of Polish Culture and she’s an officer
in the Polish American Arts Association of Washington, DC.
1958
E. James Potchen, MD,
received the Wharton Center’s Star of Touring Broadway award. Presented by
the League of American Theatres and Producers, the award recognizes
outstanding contributions of individuals throughout the nation who serve
performing arts centers. The Wharton Center is Michigan State University’s
Center for Performing Arts.
1961
Louis Silverman, MD,
is busier than ever doing general thoracic and vascular surgery.
1964
John Schwarz, MD, was featured in
Michigan Medicine in an article called “Is There A Doctor in the
House? Yes, Two! And One in the Senate.” Now serving his fourth and final
term representing the 24th District in the Michigan Senate, Dr. Schwarz
also maintains a medical practice in Battle Creek. He says he is
considering a run for governor.
1967
Susan Hershberg Adelman, MD, was
profiled for her love of art in Michigan Medicine magazine. Before
going to medical school, she considered an education in art and a career
in geology. When she was accepted to WSU for medical school, she committed
to: complete a minimum number of art pieces each year , donate money to
institutions that promote art, and continue creating works of art
throughout her life.
1971
Michael Gellis, MD,
is chairman of plastic surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak,
Mich. He maintains a plastic surgery practice in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He
travels to Wyoming every 6-8 weeks to care for the local community.
1972
Manuel Brown, MD, was recently
appointed chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Henry Ford
Hospital.
1974
George Shade, MD, is chairman of
obstetrics and gynecology, codirector of the residency-training program
and one of the trustees on the board of directors at St. John Detroit
Riverview Hospital. He was also elected chairman of the Physician
Leadership Council of St. John Health System.
Russell Van
Houzen, MD, is president of the
medical staff at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich. His son,
Nathan, just graduated from the MSU College of Human Medicine and will be
starting an internal medicine residency at New England Medical Center in
Boston. His daughter, Jennifer, just graduated from the University of
Michigan with a PharmD degree and will do a residency at Bronson Hospital
in Kalamazoo.
1977
Bruce Deschere, MD, received the
Family Practice Educator of the Year award at the Michigan Academy of
Family Physicians annual meeting in Harbor Springs in July 2001. The
2000+-member specialty society honored Dr. Deschere for more than 20 years
of education to students and residents. Dr. Deschere serves as associate
chair and director of graduate medical education for the Wayne State
University Department of Family Medicine. He just completed his year as
president of the Medical Alumni Association.
1978
Donald DeVries, MD, became a fellow
in the American College of Endocrinology in May 2001. He is currently the
director of nuclear medicine, chair of the diabetes committee, and medical
director for the diabetes school at Good Samaritan Hospital. He is also
director of the Puyallys Diabetes and Thyroid Clinic.
Tim Mead, MD,
a Muskegon orthopaedic surgeon, is working in Africa for a three-year
medical mission. Excerpts of his trip are featured regularly in
Michigan Medicine.
1979
Albert Pierce, MD, was honored by
the RARE Foundation (Recognize, Advocate, Reward, Educate) as an Unsung
Hero for providing voluntary care for burn victims and children with birth
defects through the Healing the Children program.
1981
Paul DeWeese, MD, was featured in a
Michigan Medicine article called “Is There A Doctor in the House?
Yes, Two! And One in the Senate.” Dr. DeWeese is State Representative for
the 47th District and works three nights a week as an emergency room
physician. “I’ve been pleading with physicians to become more polically
involved,” he said. “If you don’t have that physicians’ unique
perspective, a very important voice is going to get lost and the benefit
to our patients will get lost.”
1982
Bruce Hyma, MD, was promoted to
chief medical examiner and department director for the Miami Dade County
Medical Examiner Department in Miami, Fla.
Russell
Robertson, MD, has been appointed
associate dean for faculty affairs at the Medical College of Wisconsin
effective July 1, 2001. Dr. Robertson will continue to see patients and
teach, and will combine his responsibilities as associate dean for
volunteer clinical faculty with the responsibilities of his new position.
1984/1985
Lauren Kern, MD, graduated from the
Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis in June 2001 and has a private
outpatient practice in downtown Chicago. Husband John Kern, MD (1985) is
the medical director at the Southlake Center for Mental Health in
Merrillville, Indiana. They live in Flossmoor, Illinois with daughters,
Sophie (age 11) and Claire (age 9).
1985
Bradley Rowens, MD, is the new
medical director for the Michigan Institute for Sleep Medicine at
Providence Park in Novi, Mich. Dr. Rowens is board-certified in internal
medicine, sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine.
His professional affiliations include the American Sleep Disorders
Association, the American Thoracic Society and he is a fellow of the
American College of Chest Physicians.
1986
Walid Harb, MD, earned an MBA from
Madonna University in 1998. He became the program director for internal
medicine residency at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center in July 1999. He
resides in Dearborn Heights, Mich., with wife Norma and three children:
Adeeb, Alysse and Noelle.
1988
Drs. Charlotte (Liioi) and Thomas Hartzell
are pleased to announce the birth of their son,
Thomas Joseph, on May 24, 2001. He weighed 7 lbs. 8 oz. He joins his
sisters, Katie (7) and Susan (5). Tom is busy working full time at St.
John Ob/Gyn and Charlotte continues part time at Associates in
Ophthalmology, PC.
1992
Vernon Proctor, MD, ’92, was hired
as a risk manager for SCW Agency Group Inc’s new office in Grand Rapids,
Mich. SCW is a professional liability insurance agent.
1993
Kevin Crosslin, MD, is practicing
ob/gyn in Somerset, Kentucky and spouse Carol is a practicing veterinarian
in London, Kentucky. They have two children, Rawley (age 3) and Morgan

1995
Leland Babitch, MD, and his wife,
Cheryl, have relocated from St. Louis to Detroit. Leland has taken a
position in the Department of Pediatrics at Wayne State and the Children’s
Hospital of Michigan. He will be practicing in the Division of General
Pediatrics and working as an administrative fellow. He is also working on
an MBA from Michigan State University.
1996
W. Thad Rathkamp, MD, a family
physician who has been caring for patients in Bay City since August 1999
relocated to serve the health care needs of the Freeland community. He is
board certified through the American Board of Family Practice and is also
affiliated with the Saginaw County Medical Society, Michigan State Medical
Society, American Academy of Family Practice and American Medical
Association. Kamran Shokoohi, MD, is an ophthalmologist at the Great Lakes
Eye Institute.
1999
Kevin McCarthy, MD,
is doing a residency at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans.
2001
Ashok Sastry, MD, is doing his
residency at Baylor College of Medicine’s Affiliated Hospitals program. |
