Endowed Chair Established In Internal Medicine
The Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine recently recognized the career of one of their most respected faculty members as they celebrated the establishment of the Liborio Tranchida, MD, Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine. More than 170 donors, many of them personal friends and colleagues of Dr. Tranchida, attended a Nov. 10 reception at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, Mich. The reception marked the culmination of a drive that raised $1 million for the endowment. Dr. Tranchida’s career spans more than 35 years as a physician, educator and administrator. Currently serving the School of Medicine as its associate dean of faculty affairs, Dr. Tranchida has served in a variety of leadership positions since his arrival in Detroit in the late 1960s. His renown, however, stretches far beyond the campus walls. He is recognized around the world for his leadership in establishing the Saint Vincent International Award for Medical Science, considered second only to the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Far more important than his reputation as a successful administrator and award-winning physician is the role he has played in affecting countless lives for the better. In his remarks to the donors, School of Medicine Dean John Crissman, MD, quoted Tranchida friend and colleague Dr. Eric Ayers. “He always seems to give good and solid advice no matter what the circumstances may be,” Dr. Crissman read. “He is a teacher, a mentor, a professor and a friend. Few will walk the path – the just path – that he has chosen to walk in his lifetime.”
Remarking on the unique nature of the drive to create the Tranchida Chair, John O’Connell, MD, chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, noted that this endowment was the direct result of the leadership and generosity of individuals rather than corporations. A testament, Dr. O’Connell said, to the many lasting personal relationships Dr. Tranchida has developed over his illustrious career. Half the interest from the Liborio Tranchida, MD, Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine will be used to support a grant for research in cardiovascular diseases. The other half will be used to establish and support a clinical research center where physicians and scientists can access the resources needed to conduct clinical trials and pilot research that may ultimately lead to major national grant funding. Although the initial fundraising goal has been met, contributions will continue to be accepted.
