Alum Appointed Chief Medical Officer at Karmanos Cancer Institute

Michael David Henderson, MD, MPH, a boardcertified medical oncologist and School of Medicine alumnus, has been appointed chief medical officer of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.

Dr. Henderson received his medical degree with high distinction from Wayne State University in 1969, followed by a medical internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital and internal medical residency training at Case Western University/Cleveland Metropolitan Genarl Hospital, where he was also chief medical resident.

Following completion of a fellowship in medical oncology at Wayne State University/Milton A. Darling Memorial Center in 1975, he was appointed to the WSU faculty as assistant professor of medicine and medical oncology. He subsequently served on the faculty of the University of Texas School of Medicine, the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, and the University of Tennessee. In 1991, he received a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas School of Medicine.

Dr. Henderson has extensive experience as both a medical practitioner and health care administrator. For nearly 10 years, he was in private practice as a medical oncologist in Santa Barbara, Calif. He was chair of the Health Systems Agency XX and served on the California Medical Association Health Planning Committee, chair of the Santa Barbara County Medical Society Health Planning Committee, and on the American Cancer Society Santa Barbara County Board of Directors.

He subsequently served as a flight surgeon and lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force from 1985-1991, where he was the director of the Central Electrocardiography Repository at Brooks Air Force Base.

For the past decade, Dr. Henderson has focused his efforts in health care management, quality assurance and managed care. He has served as general manager, FHP Staff Model in Fountain Valley, Calif.; vice president of medical affairs, Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.; chief medical officer, Baptist Health Services Group; national practice leader of healthcare at Hewitt Associates, Lincolnshire, Ill.; chief medical officer of CNA Insurance Company in Chicago; chief executive officer, CBA Services in Chicago; and senior healthcare consultant for Tillinghast Towers-Perrin.
