During his 30-year career as a physician, educator and administrator, Dr. Tranchida has touched the lives of patients, colleagues, residents and students. The Liborio Tranchida, M.D., Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine will honor his name and achievements. As the first endowed chair in the Department of Internal Medicine, this will provide advances into the causes, treatment and prevention of disease and the care of patients. Admired by students as an extraordinary teacher, coach and mentor, Dr. Tranchida’s impact on medical education extends beyond the university campus. During the past dozen years, Dr. Tranchida has been instrumental in expanding and strengthening the relationship with the OHEP Center for Medical Education, the consortium of teaching hospitals affiliated with the School of Medicine. The consortium has had an important role in contributing to quality education for medical students and residents. Shortly after coming to the School of Medicine in the late 1960s, Dr. Tranchida demonstrated his stature as a leader. Assuming progressively more responsible leadership roles, Dr. Tranchida’s administrative service was defined by integrity and willingness to put complex issues before the faculty. During his tenure as chair of the Department of Internal Medicine in the late 1980s, Liborio Tranchida skillfully shepherded the department to establish a unified practice plan operating under a single set of bylaws. Dr. John Ensley attributes Dr. Tranchida’s success as an administrator to his “moral authority” which has enabled him to garner broad support during difficult times. From restructuring the department by unifying its operations to nurturing the expansion of the OHEP teaching network, Dr. Tranchida has unfailingly focused his energy and moral authority on achieving the highest standards of practice and medical education. The community’s generous participation in the campaign will honor Dr. Tranchida and permanently strengthen the department to which he has dedicated his career.
