Dr. Tranchida Liborio Tranchida, MD, has been appointed associate dean, faculty affairs, for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, effective immediately. Dr. Tranchida is currently professor and associate chair for community education in the WSU department of internal medicine. In announcing the appointment, School of Medicine Dean John Crissman, MD, noted that Dr. Tranchida is exceptionally suited for the role. “Liborio’s superior academic credentials, unique vision and experience will provide the basis for success in dealing with critical issues related to our 700 full-time and nearly 1500 voluntary faculty members,” said Dr. Crissman. “I am delighted he has agreed to serve in this role.” In the newly-created position, Dr. Tranchida will be responsible for faculty administrative issues including promotion and tenure, voluntary appointments and academic credentialing. Since joining WSU and the Detroit Medical Center in 1968, Dr. Tranchida has served in several leadership roles including vice chair and chair of the department of internal medicine and acting chief of the division of hematology. In recent years, he has been instrumental in expanding and strengthening clinical educational opportunities for WSU medical students and residents. Dr. Tranchida received his medical degree in 1957 from the University of Roma, Italy, and completed his internship at Fordham University in New York. After returning briefly to Italy, he began a fellowship in hematology at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Allen Park. Dr. Tranchida joined the WSU faculty after completion of a residency here in 1968. Dr. Tranchida is recognized internationally for his expertise and devotion to achieving and maintaining the highest standards of medical practice and education. He served as the coordinator of candidate proposals in the United States for the Fiuggi International Prize in medicine and biology, and played a leadership role in establishing the Saint-Vincent International Award for Medical Science. Dr. Tranchida is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Hematology. He is a member of several professional organizations and committees including the Medical Board for the Detroit Medical Center, the Wayne County Medical Society and American College of Physicians. Through his many years of faculty service, Dr. Tranchida has been honored with several teaching awards, and in 1992 was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
