Dr. Margherio

Raymond Margherio, MD, ’65, died suddenly on October 17th at the age of 60. He suffered a fatal aneurysm in Colorado while on a hunting and fishing trip with his sons. Since 1979, he had been chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.

Dr. Margherio was an active alumnus, supporting the School of Medicine as an Anthony Wayne Society donor and a committed volunteer. A member of the school’s faculty, he also held leadership positions in the Medical Alumni Association, including the organization’s presidency in 1989 followed by numerous terms as its treasurer. During the 1990s, he was appointed to the School of Medicine Board of Visitors and received the Distinguished Alumni Award, one of the school’s highest honors.

Following an internship at Detroit’s Grace Hospital, Dr. Margherio completed a residency at Detroit General Hospital and fellowships at Kresge Eye Institute and the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School where he was awarded a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship. He was the founder of the Beaumont Eye Institute.

His career-long research activity is reflected in an impressive publication record and his involvement in physician training was similarly strong. In addition to his WSU appointment, he was a professor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine and clinical professor of biomedical sciences at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.

Dr. Margherio also was active in local, state and national professional organizations. In addition to holding memberships, he served as a board member and president of the Michigan Ophthalmological Society, vice president of the Kresge Eye Institute Alumni Association, and treasurer and president of the Retina Society of Michigan.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters and three grandchildren. A memorial fund honoring Dr. Margherio’s memory is being established at the School of Medicine. For information, please contact alumni affairs at (313) 577-3587.
