John Crissman, MD, dean of the School of Medicine, was presented with the “Friend of MAPI” award from the Michigan Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (MAPI). He was honored for supporting minorities and Indian physicians in research and academic achievement. Mary Beth Hardwicke, MD, assistant professor of internal medicine, was elected by the medical students to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical academic honor society. Teresa Holtrop, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics, received the second annual Dr. Clarence S. Livingood Award at the CATCH Night of Champions Awards Dinner. Dr. Holtrop is medical director of the Pediatric Mobile Team of Children's Hospital of Michigan. CATCH is Sparky Anderson's children's charity that assists pediatric patients at Children's Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital. Jerome Horwitz, PhD, professor of internal medicine, was honored at Operation ABLE's 11th annual "Ability is Ageless" luncheon. Operation ABLE sponsors the annual event to honor mid-career and older employees who make a difference to their companies through their experience, work ethic and commitment to excellence. Mark Juzych, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology, has been named by Crain's Detroit Business as one of the city's most promising young professionals. He is included in the annual “40 Under 40” list. A WSU School of Medicine graduate, Dr. Juzych serves as residency program director and coordinator of the medical student ophthalmology elective at WSU's Kresge Eye Institute. Silas Norman, Jr, MD, assistant professor of internal medicine, was honored by the Wayne State University Organization of Black Alumni. Dr. Norman is vice president of Affiliated Internists of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Ananda Prasad, MD, PhD, professor of internal medicine, was honored with the Medical/Humanitarian Community Service Award from the Michigan Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (MAPI). The award is presented annually to a life member of MAPI who has achieved significant admiration in teaching, research, publications, humanitarian services and charitable activities. David
Rosenberg, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences,
was recognized as an “Outstanding Mentor” at the 47th
annual meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry. In addition, one of his research projects was chosen as an
“Exemplary Grant” by the Society for Neuroscience and is now used as
an aid to prospective grant applicants. Richard Santucci, MD, assistant professor of urology, won first place in the Joseph F. McCarthy Physician Essay Contest/Western Section of the American Urologic Association (AUA/WS). Santucci was honored for his clinical paper presented at the AUA/WS national meeting. The paper was titled “Validation of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Organ Injury Severity Scale for the Kidney.” Andrew Sloan, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery, was honored with the 2000 ASCO Clinical Research Career Development Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncologists. Ernie Yoder, MD, associate chair of internal medicine, is this year’s recipient of the Association of American Medical Colleges Central Group on Education Affairs (CGEA) Medical Education Laureate Award and he is a member of the CGEA Society of Medical Education Laureates.
