WSU Gets Highest-Power Human MRI Scanner in State

In April, the WSU School of Medicine acquired a 4T MRI system, the highest field human MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner in the state and one of only 10 in the country. It provides brain imaging and precise measurement of multiple neurochemicals, advancing the study of diseases including depression, stroke, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and more.

Anti-Chlamydial Vaccine on the Horizon

Dr. Judith Whittum-Hudson is part of a team developing a vaccine against the C. trachomatis bacterium, which is closely related to Chlamydia pneumoniae and has been linked to the onset of multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease.
Family History More Powerful Than Cholesterol Levels in Predicting Risk for Heart Disease

Only 50 percent of a person’s risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) can be explained by traditional risk factors like high cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle and obesity, said Maren Scheuner, MD. She reported at the Michigan Statewide Genetics Symposium that a person’s family history is the most important predictor of CHD.
Videostroboscopy Aids Diagnosis of Hard-to-Detect Voice Disorders

Faculty members at the WSU Voice, Speech and Swallowing Center use videostroboscopy to assess patients with benign vocal cord pathologies including nodules and polyps, vocal cord trauma and paralysis, spasmodic dysphonia and laryngeal carcinoma.

Medical Student Reaches Out to the Hearing-Impaired Community

First-year medical student Joshua Dilworth has established the Deaf Outreach and Community Service Program for Medical Students (DOCS). DOCS brings the medical school’s existing co-curricular programs to deaf and hearing-impaired audiences.

WSU School of Medicine Successfully Concludes Inaugural ‘Mini Med School’

Approximately 90 participants graduated from WSU’s first “Mini Medical School,” a free, six-week program funded by Pfizer to break down barriers between the academic medical center and its surrounding community.

Leaders in Michigan Health Care Share Their Vision of a Better Delivery System

Two major players in Michigan health care participated in a summit at the School of Medicine in March. James Haveman, director of the Michigan Department of Community Health, and Dr. Arthur Porter, president and CEO of the Detroit Medical Center, called for increased cooperation between government and the medical profession to ensure healthier populations.

Mack Lecture Shares a Bronx Tale

“Your assets and your environment must drive your strategy,” said Dr. Spencer Foreman, as he presented the Robert E. Mack, MD, Lecture at Scott Hall. As president of Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Foreman showed many parallels between his situation in the Bronx and that of WSU and the Detroit Medical Center.

Human Research Director Urges Adoption of 'Culture of Conscience'

Protecting human research was the focus of the Dean's Distinguished Lecture which hosted a presentation by Greg Koski, MD, PhD, director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Human Research.

Successful Match Day for Class of 2001

Carol Stewart, research assistant in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, has been named the 2001 Michigan Registered Nurse of the Year.
