1939
Martha Liggett Wells, MD,
is the oldest member of the Ridgewriters, a writing group that meets weekly in Farmington Hills, Mich. The Farmington Hills Twenty-fifth Anniversary Cookbook included seven of the recipes she has submitted since joining the group.

1950

Donald Blain, MD,
was invited by the University of Athens to present a paper at the Second International Congress for the History of Urology on the island of Kos, Greece, in May 2001. Kos is the place where Hippocrates, the father of medicine, practiced and taught.  

1952
 

Kouichi Tanaka, MD, gave a lecture at the International Conference on Red Cells November 7, 2000, in Kurashiki, Japan. Corky and Grace were guests of the Japanese Society of Clinical Hematology. Six former research fellows of Dr. Tanaka’s hematology research laboratory gathered from various parts of Japan for a luncheon reunion in his honor. Dr. Tanaka is professor emeritus of Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.  

1962 
B. David Wilson, MD,
a Kalamazoo allergist, was re-elected as a delegate to the American Medical Association during the Michigan State Medical Society’s annual House of Delegates meeting on May 6 in Dearborn. Dr. Wilson will serve a two-year term on the 26-member Michigan Delegation to the AMA’s House of Delegates, which sets policies on issues such as public health, health-care delivery and medical ethics. Dr. Wilson is on staff at Bronson Methodist Hospital and Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He is also a member of the AMA’s Organization of State Medical Association Presidents and is a past president of MSMS.

1970 
Marinus Van Ooyen, MD,
is a board– certified radiologist in Adrian, president of Adrian Radiology PC, and chief of radiology for Lenawee Health Alliance Systems. He attended Hope College and Western Michigan University before he earned his MD from Wayne State University. He completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic.

1971 
Robert Zgliniec, MD,
reports: “I will not be able to attend the 30th class reunion in May. I will, however, return to Detroit in June when my son, Steve, receives his MD degree. He is going into internal medicine as I am practicing. He still does not know where he will be doing his residency. I am so happy and proud.”

1976 
Kenneth Westfield, MD,
of the Shearing-Westfield Eye Institute, traveled to Lascahobas, an isolated and impoverished mountain village in Haiti, in February to treat debilitating eye conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma for an entire week. This is his fifth humanitarian mission to Lascahobas in six years.

1977 
Karl Kolbe, MD,
is an internist in Troy, Mich. He was recently elected as fellow of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine upon the recommendation of his peers. Dr. Kolbe has been on staff at William Beaumont Hospital-Troy for 20 years and has been involved in teaching family-practice residents and students for Wayne State University School of Medicine in the Continuity Clerkship Program. Dr. Kolbe resides in Troy and is married to Kathleen and has three children: Meghan (22), Nicholas (17), and Mark (16).

1979 
Daniel B. Michael, MD,
a Detroit neurosurgeon, was elected vice speaker of the Michigan State Medical Society House of Delegates at its 136th annual meeting on May 5 in Dearborn. As vice speaker, Dr. Michael will preside at the will of the speaker over the 300 physician delegates who assemble each year to set policies on various issues involving public health, health-care delivery and medical ethics for the 14,500- member society. He is president-elect of the Wayne County Medical Society and is a member of the WCMS board of trustees and executive council. He also is a member of the WCMS Medical Education Committee and the MSMS Medicaid Liaison Committee. Dr. Michael is chief of the department of neurological surgery and surgical director in the neurotrauma intensive care unit at Detroit Receiving Hospital and assistant professor of neurological surgery at the School of Medicine.

1980
Richard Gerber, MD,
is board certified in internal medicine and is an international lecturer in alternative healing approaches. He practices with the Chairwood Medical Group in Warren, Mich. 

Thomas L. Simmer, MD, vice president and corporate medical director for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, has been inducted as a fellow for the American College of Physicians- American Society of Internal Medicine. He has written numerous articles on managed care and quality health management and is a member of the Michigan State Medical Society.  

1981 
Ronald Joanette, MD,
has been elected to serve as an officer at West Shore Medical Center. He has been a member of the West Shore Medical Center medical staff since 1986. He is currently chief of obstetrics and served as vice chief of staff from 1999-2000.

Janet Stern, MD, was named residency program director in obstetrics and gynecology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.

1983
Bradford J. Merrelli, MD,
was elected to serve as chief of staff at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills, Mich., for 2001-2002.

1986 
Susan Thrasher Martin, MD,
pathologist at Southeastern Clinical Laboratories in Seneca, SC, was recently appointed to the College of American Pathologists’ Instrumentation Resource Committee. Dr. Martin resides in Anderson with her husband, Ernest Martin, MD, and children Hugh and Cameron.

1989 
Demetrios Katsikas, MD,
will be conducting weekly outpatient clinics at Utlaut Memorial Hospital, replacing Saul Klein, MD, who recently retired.

1990
Henry Randall, MD,
joined the University of Louisville in July 2000 as an assistant professor of surgery. He is also the director of the Liver Transplant Program and Live Donor Liver Transplantation.

1991 
Abdhish Bhavsar, MD,
reports: “We had our first baby boy, Nirayudh, on March 14, 2000. I completed a term as president of the Minneapolis Ophthalmologic Society and was elected as a board member for the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology. I was one of 18 in the nation selected for the 2001-2002 American Academy of Ophthalmology Leadership Development Program.”

Darien Bradford, MD, began private practice in cardiac and thoracic surgery in Irving, Texas, in July 2000. “Hello to all my former classmates and compadres during medical school.”

William Cardasis, MD, reports: “We had twin boys in July 2000 and they were born on two different days. I have been working as a forensic psychiatrist in Ann Arbor, Mich., and doing consultations with corporations, businesses and school systems to reduce workplace violence.”

1994 
Ryan Doddle, II, MD,
plastic surgeon, has joined Lakeshore Surgical Associates.

Maria Livieratos, MD, a Genesys family practitioner, has chosen to return to her hometown of Clarkston to provide medical care to families in the community where she was raised. She is board certified in family practice and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians and the Daughters of Penelope Order of AHEPA Senior Women’s Auxiliary. She lives in Clarkston; speaks Greek fluently; and enjoys skiing, volleyball, racquetball, ATV sports, muscle cars and vintage cars.

1995 
Preeti Malani, MD, and Mark Zacharek, MD,
welcomed their son, Nicholas Naveen, on Oct. 24, 2000. Preeti is a lecturer in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Michigan and Mark is finishing his ENT residency at the Detroit Medical Center. “Mom, Dad and Nick are having a great time together!”  

1996

Kamran Shokoohi, MD,
reports, “After finishing residency in ophthalmology at Kresge Eye Institute, I joined Great Lakes Eye Institute in Saginaw, Mich. Currently, I am practicing comprehensive ophthalmology and cataract surgery.”

1997 
David A. Wadowski, MD,
will be completing his ophthalmology residency at Cook County Hospital in July and will be returning to the Detroit area at Providence Hospital.

1997 & 1998 
Howard R. Belkin, MD, DDS, JD,
‘98, has authored the chapter, “Legal Consideration in Fetal Treatment,” in the Third edition of The Unborn Patient: The Art and Science of Fetal Therapy. He has also coauthored, with Michael Diamond, MD, WSU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Mark I. Evans, MD, WSU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and Barbara R. Herzig, MD, ‘97, the journal article, “Legal Implications of the Treatment of Infertility: An Overview,” recently published in Reproductive Reviews. He has also worked with Dr. Herzig on “Mood Disorders in Dental Practice,” published in the Texas Dental Journal.

RESIDENT ALUMNI NOTES

Dr. Lisa Cardwell is living her lifelong dream as a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology at the Detroit Medical Center’s Community Health Center at 18709 Meyers in Detroit. She is partnering with Drs. David Stone and Curtiz Meriwether, and is thrilled to be part of a new partnership at the new location.

Dr. Mihir Meghani (2000) has been working for Kaiser Permante in Hayward, Calif., in emergency services. He is also a part of the Disaster Medical Assistance Team, a volunteer team coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Assistance.

Dr. Mildred Olivier (1993) has extensive training and experience in treating all forms of glaucoma and related eye diseases. Dr. Olivier serves as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center. She has dedicated countless hours to her professional work, as well as to the volunteer work she performs with Prevent Blindness America and other organizations. She has been a PBA volunteer for the past seven years.
