Honors

John Baker, MD, adjunct faculty member in ophthalmology and chief of ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, was the second Marshall M. Parks Lecturer and Award recipient at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Michael Busuito, MD, assistant professor of surgery, was honored as humanitarian of the year by Nothdurft Pediatric Endowment of St. John Health System. He was chosen for providing free surgical services to Mexican children with deformities.

Alexa Canady, MD, professor of neurosurgery and chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, was chosen as one of the country’s most outstanding doctors by Child magazine.

Michael Cher, MD, assistant professor of urology, was honored with the President’s Clinical/Translational Research Award from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Cher is developing an animal model system to study how prostate cancer cells spread to the bone.

Lawrence Flaherty, MD, professor of internal medicine, was honored with the President’s Clinical Service Award from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Flaherty is one of the institute’s busiest clinicians and serves as principal investigator for the Southwest Oncology Group grants. 

Bernard Gonik, MD, associate chair of obstetrics and gynecology, was honored by The American College of Gynecology (ACOG) with its 2000 "Wyeth-Ayerst Section Award" for his role in helping obstetricians/gynecologists implement vaccination programs through their practices.

Dr. Andrew Hobbs, a second year pediatric dental resident at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, has been chosen as one of eight finalists for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation 2000-01 Graduate Student Research Award competition. He will be presenting his research topic at the AAPD 54th Annual Session in May 2001. Dr Jian-Fu Zhu, co-director of WSU Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program, serves as Hobbs research advisor.

Larry Matherly, PhD, associate professor of internal medicine (cancer), was honored with the President’s Basic Research Award from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Matherly’s work focuses on the biology of folic acid and he is currently studying how anti-folates kill cancer cells.

Ravi Singareddy, MD, a resident in the psychiatry and internal medicine double board program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, was selected to participate in the 2001 National Institute of Mental Health Intramural Research Grantwriting Workshop. The award includes a four-day workshop at the NIH campus followed by a 10-week individual tutorial.

Andrew Sloan, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery, was presented with the 2000 ASCO Clinical Research Career Development Award by the American Society of Clinical Oncologists. The award was based on Dr. Sloan’s work on a new treatment for brain tumors.

William Stengle, assistant professor of internal medicine (cancer), was honored with the President’s Community-Based Research Award from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. He serves as the director of cancer information services at Karmanos.

Natalia Tanner, MD, professor of pediatrics, received the Outstanding Achievement in Adolescent Medicine Award from the Society for Adolescent Medicine.

Charles Whitten, MD, associate dean for special programs and distinguished professor of pediatrics emeritus, has been honored by several institutions in the last few months.

Meharry Medical College named Dr. Whitten Alumnus of the Year, 2000.

The Black Medical Association established the Charles F. Whitten Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented annually to a deserving person. The inaugural award was presented to Dr. Whitten.

The Lulabelle Stewart Center for Unwed Parents presented Dr. Whitten with a Humanitarian Award for his many years of service.

The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America presented him with a Legacy Award. Dr. Whitten has been part of the organization’s leadership for 21 years.
