Dear Member of the WSU School of Medicine Community:

As some of you are aware, WSU President Irvin Reid is in the process of leading a strategic planning initiative to guide the university over the course of the next five years. This initiative centers on four pillars that highlight our preeminence in research and scholarship: the strength of our urban experience, the importance of our global presence, the implementation of new technologies and our continued commitment to diversity.

Concurrently, I have initiated a strategic planning process for the School of Medicine. While this plan will be specific to the needs of the school and its diverse and specialized constituencies, it will keep at its core the guiding principals President Reid has established for the university. The initial program planning process will formulate and frame strategic goals and objectives in our primary foci of research, education and clinical care and will conclude with a business analysis process evaluating needs for human, capital and financial resources.

I look forward to updating you on the progress of this important initiative in the coming months and I hope to receive input from a great many of you along the way. We each have our own vision of greatness for the school. Working these individual ideas into one set of guiding principles is a challenge I am looking forward to.

I have asked members of the school’s leadership team to chair committees in our focus areas, and preliminary work is well underway. Our timeline is roughly now through the summer, when we anticipate the release of a guiding document that clearly addresses our three missions and places us more closely to our goal of becoming the world's best medical school.

Sincerely,

John Crissman, MD
Dean, School of Medicine
