Roy Davis, MD,
sends news. “I am still doing locum tenens about 3-4 months a year, enjoy good health and look forward to seeing classmates at the reunion.”

1958
Murray L. Janower, MD,
recently received the Gold Medal, a lifetime achievement award from the American College of Radiology. Dr. Janower completed residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and was chief of radiology at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass. for almost 30 years. The author of three books and 94 articles, he holds academic appointments as professor at the University of Massachusetts, lecturer at Harvard University and consultant radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

1964 
Paul P. Fecko, MD,
received the President’s Round Island Lighthouse Award at the Michigan Ophthalmological Society’s annual conference. He was honored for his outstanding contributions to the society and the practice of ophthalmology. Dr. Fecko also won the Innovation Award for service to the society in the area of state legislative affairs.

Charles A. Main, MD, is chief of pediatric hematology/oncology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. He was recently awarded a 2000 MHA Physician Leadership Award for community service and exceptional contributions to health care.

1968
David M. Barrett, MD,
of Andover, Mass., is CEO and chairman of the board of the Lahey Clinic. He has been elected to the board of directors of the Massachusetts High Technology Council.

1975 
Robert R. DiLoreto, MD,
has been named chairman of the board of St. John Hospital and Medical Center. He is a senior partner of the Michigan Institute of Urology, a 20-physician group.

Alan Israel, MD, was mistakenly listed as deceased in the 25th anniversary directory of 1975 graduates. Dr. Israel, alive and thriving, lives in Costa Mesa, Calif. and practices internal medicine. The Office of Alumni Affairs regrets the error, and Dr. Israel recalls Mark Twain’s remark, “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

1976
Robert D. Beitman, MD,
medical director of the Beitman Laser Eye Institute of Bloomfield and Brighton Mich., served as honorary chair of the 2001 Corporate Leadership Breakfast for the Michigan chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

 


1977

Bruce Deschere, MD,
designated an international physician by the United States Figure Skating Association, provides care to American skaters during international competitions. In January 2001, Dr. Deschere, as the team USA physician, joined athletes in traveling to the North American International Synchronized Skating Competition in Orlando, Fla., where the U.S. sent eight teams to compete against skaters from Canada, Switzerland, Finland and Croatia. The entire American contingent, comprised of more than 200 athletes, coaches, team managers and other support personnel, depended on Dr. Deschere for medical care.

Julie A. Kish, MD, sends news. “In May 2000, I joined the faculty of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center at the University of South Florida in Tampa as an associate professor. In October 2000, I was named principal investigator to the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) for Moffitt.”

1981
Michael Busuito, MD,
received the Humanitarian of The Year Award from the Nothdurft Pediatric Endowment of St John Health System at the group’s 2000 fundraising dinner. A plastic surgeon with a practice in Clinton Township, Mich., Dr. Busuito is on staff at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. He travels to Mexico several times each year to perform surgery on children with severe facial deformities who would otherwise be unable to obtain treatment.


1982 & 1983

Nancy Fuller, MD, ’82, and Kevin McKown, MD, ’83,
report: “After 15 years in Memphis and the University of Tennessee, we have returned to the Midwest and have joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kevin is director of the rheumatology fellowship, and Nancy works primarily in women’s health. We love Madison – especially the snow!”

1987
Mark Zainea, MD,
a cardiologist, has joined St. Joseph Mercy Hospital of Macomb, in Clinton Township, Mich.  

1988
Michael VanRooyen, MD,
was featured as “Dr. Danger” in the February 2001 issue of Reader’s Digest. Dr. VanRooyen, founding director of the Johns Hopkins Center for International Emergency, Disaster and Refugee Studies, was described as a “health hero” who has brought medical care to victims of natural disasters and armed conflicts around the world. 

1989
Daniel Ryan, MD,
has been elected president of the Michigan Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

1991
Kimberly Gronsman Lee, MD,
reports, “We welcomed our daughter, Eleanor Hae-Ran on September 7th. She is the delight of our lives (and in my professional opinion, a perfect baby!). I was appointed a Rabkin Fellow in Medical Education at the Shapiro Institute for Education and Research (a joint effort of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School) and have some ‘protected time’ this year – nearly all of which is going to Eleanor right now! My husband, Kyu, continues his cardiovascular developmental biology research at HMS, and I’ll take up my clinical duties as a neonatologist BIDMC again in January. It was great to run into Rita Mangione-Smith at the pediatric meetings in Boston this past spring, and I’d love to hear from other long-lost WSU friends. Has it really been nearly 10 years? Paul Chuba, MD, PhD,
a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Clinical Ligand Assay, was recently named as its book and software reviews editor. A radiation oncologist, he is associated with Detroit’s St. John Hospital & Medical Center.

Fikir Morkoc, MD, PhD
, a hospital-based internal medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente since 1997, has been named to Sutter Medical Group’s Hospitalist Program at Sutter hospitals in Sacramento, Calif.

1994
Angela Schultz, MD,
completed her residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich. She is a member of the McLaren Regional Medical Center staff and its Flushing Community Health Center.

Alan Woronoff, MD, writes, “Shira and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our son, Jason, in May, 2000. Nearly a year old now, he is doing wonderful things and constantly amazes us. I am in private practice in radiology in Abington, Pa. and enjoy my field every day.

1995
Eric Johnston, MD,
joined the medical staff of Silver Cross Hospital and Medical Centers in Joliet, Ill. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio.

1996
Michael Fiore, MD,
a chief resident at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, was featured in a recent issue of CHM’s publication, About Children.  He completed the three-year categorical pediatrics residency last year.

1997
Loveleen Barringer, MD,
did her residency in family medicine at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich. and has joined the staff of the McLaren Community Medical Center in Davison, Mich. She is also a member of the McLaren Regional Medical Center Staff.

Angela (Angie) Sweeney, MD, practices family medicine at the McLaren Family Care Center in Flushing, Mich. and also is a member of the McLaren Regional Medical Center staff. Dr. Sweeney completed residency training at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich.
