Grandon
Prize in Ophthalmology Supports Promising Residents’ Research
Alumnus Stanley C. Grandon, MD, ’70, is establishing a prize fund to
recognize talented Kresge Eye Institute residents interested in
refractive surgery by supporting their research and encouraging its
publication. Dr. Grandon recalls that during his residency at Kresge Eye
Institute, mentors, such as Dr. Robert Jampel, created an environment
that stimulated the development of innovative procedures. Dr Grandon’s
professional life has been shaped by that same focus. He assisted Dr.
Leo Bores in the first radial keratotomy performed outside the USSR and
has himself become an authority in the field, developing improved
techniques and instruments for refractive surgery and Lasik procedures,
publishing articles, training other ophthalmologists and lecturing
extensively. Dr. Grandon’s book, The Complete Guide to Refractive
Surgery, already in a second edition, is the most comprehensive
consumer guide on the subject.

Pharmacology
Department Founders Honored
A new endowment, The Founder’s Endowed Fund in the Department of
Pharmacology, will commemorate the department’s founding nearly 30
years ago and recognize the faculty members who served during its
formative years. Drs. Bernard Marks, Harold Goldman, Saradindu Dutta,
and Gordon Anderson joined the department faculty in the early 1970s.
The recent deaths of Drs. Dutta and Marks provided the impetus to
establish an endowment to support lectures, research and other scholarly
activities. For information about making a gift to The Founder’s
Endowed Fund in the Department of Pharmacology, contact Terri
Edelstein, 313-577-2830.
