Al-Katib, MD,
professor of internal medicine, was awarded a one-year
grant to study new treatment strategies in Waldenstrom’s
macroglobulinemia from the International Waldenstrom’s
Macroglobulinemia Foundation. Ramon Berguer, MD, PhD, professor and chief of vascular surgery, has been inaugurated as president of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Kertia
Black, MD,
associate chair of physical medicine and rehabilitation,
has been named chief of staff at the Rehabilitation Institute of
Michigan. A. Joseph Brough, MD, associate professor of pathology, has been named chief of staff at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, associate professor of neurology, gave a presentation on “Thrombolytic Treatment for Acute Stroke Resulting from Cardiac Procedures” at the European Stroke Conference. WSU co-authors included Drs. Alex Tselis and William Coplin. Dr.

also gave a presentation on “The Spectrum of Cerebral
Ischemia in Oral Contraceptive Users” at the Canadian Congress of
Neurological Sciences. Marc
Cullen, MD,
assistant professor of surgery, has been appointed
director of surgical critical care and associate director of the NICU at
Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Michael
Diamond, MD,
associate chair of obstetrics and gynecology, was an
invited presenter at the Endometriosis 2000 7th Biennial
World Congress. His presentation was titled “Why Does Endometriosis
Cause Adhesions?” Omar
Khan, MD,
assistant professor of neurology, presented a paper
comparing Avonex, Betaseron and Copaxone at the 10th meeting
of the European Neurologic Society. Co-authors included Drs. James
Garbern, John Kamholz, Richard Lewis, Robert Lisak and Alex
Tselis. Robert
Lisak, MD,
professor and chair of neurology, presented a paper at
the 10th meeting of the European Neurological Society. He
also served as a consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health
and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for a
research roundtable on future directions in research on pediatric
autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal
infections. Mildred
Matlock, PhD,
assistant professor of physical medicine and
rehabilitation, has been named chief operating officer for the
Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan. Samuel
Perov, MD,
associate professor of anesthesiology, was a guest
speaker at the first European Society of Regional Anaesthesia (ESRA)
Baltic Meeting in Riga, Latvia. For the past four years, Dr. Perov has
organized and participated in seminars for CRNAs in Latvia, Estonia and
Lithuania, in association with the ESRA. Arthur
Porter, MD,
professor of radiation oncology, has been selected as a
member of the Michigan Hospital Association Corporate Board. David
Rosenberg, MD,
associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral
neurosciences, made a presentation about new brain models in obsessive
compulsive disorder at the International Congress of
Neuropsychopharmacology. Robert
Ross, MD,
associate professor of pediatrics, hosted the 28th
annual meeting of the Ohio Area Doctors Interested in Congenital Heart
Disease at WSU/Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Frank
Stasa, III,
and Frank Stasa, IV, both of medical school
information systems, participated in the 151st Annual
Highland Games, sponsored by the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit. In
addition, the Stasas were featured in a television commercial for the
games, in partnership with the McCarty Cancer Foundation.

White, MD,
assistant professor of emergency medicine, was one of six
individuals selected to provide leadership and medical control for
TOPOFF, an exercise that tests U.S. response protocols to acts of
terrorism, including chemical, biological and nuclear disasters.
