Honors

Savitha Balaraman, MD, first-year resident at Sinai-Grace, won first place for a presentation at the American College of Physicians Associates Meeting.

Basil El-Rayes, MD, chief medicine resident at Sinai-Grace, won first place in the Annual Resident Research Day for WSU/DMC internal medicine residents.

Enrique Garcia-Valenzuela, MD, PhD, fellow at Kresge Eye Institute, has been awarded a student stipend from the Midwest Eye-Banks and Transplantation Center to work on a research project titled “Diabetic Choroidal Changes Analyzed with Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopic Indocyanine Green Angiography.” His supervisor is Dr. Gary Abrams, professor and chair of ophthalmology.

Jerome Horwitz, PhD,  professor of internal medicine and senior investigator at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, has been chosen the RARE Award winner for his excellence in the field of science. The Troy-based RARE Foundation, which recognizes a hero in the world of work each month, honored Horwitz at a "This is Your Life Evening" for family and friends at the Gem Theatre.

Charlene Irvin, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine, has been selected as the Emergency Physician of the Year by the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians’ Board of Directors. In addition, Dr. Irvin was awarded for giving the best oral presentation at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Ohio/Midwest Regional Research Symposium.

Mark Marunick, DDS, associate professor of otolaryngology, is listed in the 2000 publication of Guide to America’s Top Dentists, published by Consumers’ Research Council of America.

Viji Sankaranarayanan, MD, third-year internal medicine resident at Sinai-Grace, was the first-place winner in the Oakland Health Research Forum. He also won second place in the research division’s annual Resident Research Day.

Maryjean Schenk, MD, interim chair of family medicine, has been selected to participate in the sixth class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women, which prepares women faculty for senior leadership positions at academic health centers.
