Medical students will find it easier to remain healthy and active between classes at Scott Hall, thanks to the addition of eight new state-of-the-art fitness machines in the student fitness center. Just in time for the new school year, some older equipment has been replaced with two Precor Commercial Treadmills, two Precor Elliptical Cross Trainers, one Tectrix Upright Bike Max, a Tectrix Climb Max, VersaClimber and a Smith Machine with olympic weights. “Students are particularly excited about the elliptical trainers,” said Chuck Pokriefka, facilities director, who was instrumental in getting the new equipment. “They seem to be one of the most popular new machines in the fitness industry and students will certainly appreciate the cardiovascular and weight-lifting workout that might provide some stress-relief between studies.” The Medical Alumni Association originally provided funding to establish the center in 1993 and they have continually provided funds for repairs and maintenance of the equipment. This year, six new machines were purchased by the school. The Smith Machine was donated by the alumni association and the VersaClimber was donated by Ken Welch, owner of Pointe Fitness and Training. “We are thankful for contributions such as these, that show our collective commitment to the health and well-being of our students,” said Jane Thomas, PhD, assistant dean for student affairs.
