WSU Department of Pathology Residency Program


General Considerations:

  • This is a residency training program in Pathology offered to people with an M.D. degree. We offer a 4-year training program in combined Anatomic Pathology & Clinical Pathology and a 3-year training program in Anatomic Pathology alone. The program also offers fellowship positions in Cytopathology, Hematopathology, Pediatric Pathology, and Surgical Pathology.

  • Application & Deadline: Applications accepted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) only. Completed applications should be received by December 31st. The Pathology residency program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Q. Do I need to be licensed by the board of this state to be admitted to the program?

A. Yes. Following acceptance into the program, you must obtain temporary licensure. Residents are encouraged to obtain permanent licensure as soon as they meet the qualifications.

Q. Are Residents required to take step 3 during training?

A. Yes. All residents must have taken and passed Step 3 by the end of their second year in the program.

Q. Are there residents from international medical schools currently enrolled in the program?

A. Yes.

Q. What are the criteria for selection to the Pathology residency program at WSU?

A. The residency committee considers USMLE scores, previous training and experience, your personal statement of interest in Pathology, letters of recommendation, and a personal interview. Most successful applicants score above 85 in USMLE in Steps 1& 2.

Q. What should an applicant include in the personal statement?

A. Your personal statement should summarize your particular background and interests and depict you as a person. You should indicate in your personal statement why you are interested in Pathology, what kind of experience you have had with Pathology, and what career path you plan to follow after training.

Q. Do I need to pass step 3 of the USMLE before I can apply for an H-1 visa?

A. Yes, you need to pass Step 3 before you can apply for an H-1 visa. Please note that March is VERY late to apply since the H-1 application process is very time-consuming. There is no guarantee we will offer H-1 each year.

Q. Do I need to submit results for USMLE Step 3 in order to apply for the residency program at WSU Department of Pathology residency program?

A. No, you do not need Step 3 results to apply to the residency, although it is recommended. International medical graduates must have passed Step III prior to the match deadline to be considered for H-1 visa.

Q. Is there a specific cut-off date for graduation?

A. Most successful applicants have applied within 10 years of graduating from medical school.

Q. Is Step 2 CS required for an interview or as an application prerequisite?

A. No. Step 2 CS is not required for interviewing or for application, but must be obtained before rank decisions are made, as successful completion of Step 2 CS is required for licensure.

Q. Is ECFMG certification required for interviewing?

A. Yes. ECFMG certification is required for interviewing.

Q. Is there a policy regarding the number of attempts at the USMLE?

A. We have no policy regarding number of attempts in USMLE.

Q. Does your program offer an observership program?

A. No. There is no formal observership program.

Q. Does your program require previous training or experience in Pathology?

A. No. Previous training or experience is useful in confirming your interest in a career in Pathology. Individuals with extensive previous training and practice in Pathology should justify their reasons for desiring re-training.
