The School of Medicine acquires a 4T magnet to boost imaging research and clinical capabilities

2.
Wayne State is designated a core facility in the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor, an initiative that joins the state's research partners for biological research.

3.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse awards WSU an $11 million grant for the Clinical Trials Networks to provide research on drug addiction treatments.

4.
School of Medicine establishes the Nanobiotechnology Center, allowing investigators to understand biological processes at the nanoscale.

5.
Match Day 2001 presents 88 percent of participating medical students with one of their top three choices for residency training.

6.
The Michigan Cell Therapy Center for Excellence is developed as a joint venture between Wayne State University, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and Aastrom Biosciences Inc. to develop and optimize cell-based therapies.

7.
Commencement ceremonies honor 228 new physicians to graduate with the Class of 2001.

8.
Mini Medical School program brings community leaders to WSU to learn more about academic medicine, research and health care.

Dr. Chuan-pu Lee wins 2000 Michigan Women's Hall of Fame Life Achievement Award.

Dr. Maryjean Schenk is appointed to lead the Department of Family Medicine and becomes the School of Medicine's first female clinical chair.

New departmental chair appointments include: David Grignon (pathology), Jeffrey Forman (radiation oncology), John Malone (obstetrics and gynecology), and George Murakawa (dermatology and syphilology).

12.
New administrative appointments include:  Donna Dauphinais (chief of staff), Joan Dunbar (director of biotechnology development), Kenneth Ginsburg (assistant dean for clinical science education), James Hazlett (assistant dean for basic science education), Helene Lycaki (assistant dean for health affairs), David Pieper (assistant dean for continuing medical education), J. Edson Pontes (assistant dean for international affairs), Liborio Tranchida (associate dean for faculty affairs), and Daniel Walz (associate dean for research and graduate programs).
